If Your AI Career Coach Can't Optimize Their Own LinkedIn Profile, They Can't Optimize Your Career

A former Amazon recruiter was invited to try an AI career coach promising to handle every part of the job search. Ten seconds of scanning later, here is what she found - and why relationships still beat algorithms every time.

If your AI career coach can't even optimize their own LinkedIn profile, they definitely can't optimize your career. Here's how I know.

I was invited to be featured on a platform promoting an AI career coach that could "handle every part" of the job search. So I got curious.

Fancy video. Slick sales page. Promised an AI twin running a job search with everything you could ever want.

Then, 10 seconds of scanning later:

    • Misspellings on their profile
    • Zero positioning and an outdated cover photo from their last job
    • Only about 2,000 followers while positioning as a connection-building expert
    • No recruiting or hiring experience
    • Two different names on the profile and the email signature

If your AI coach can't get their own name, brand, and credibility right, how will they manage your search for top jobs?

I have seen where this road leads. It does not lead to six-figure job offers.

Related: Why volume-based job applications fail.

It reminded me of my conversation with Robert Coombs, author of the Fast Company article "I Built A Bot To Apply To Thousands Of Jobs At Once."

His bot sent thousands of custom applications and cover letters. Job offers? Zero. The one offer he eventually accepted came from a relationship.

And he is not alone. Decades of research from Stanford, Harvard, and MIT prove that weak-tie networking - building connections beyond your immediate circle - has been proven to open better and higher-value doors than any other job search method.

Relationships win. Every time. In every market. Against every algorithm.

The AI tools promising to automate your way to a six-figure offer are optimizing for a game that the best roles never play. The hidden job market runs on trust, referrals, and being known before the role opens.

No bot can replicate that. No algorithm closes that gap.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Can AI replace human judgment in a job search?

No. Decades of research from Stanford, Harvard, and MIT prove that weak-tie networking - building connections beyond your immediate circle - opens better and higher-value doors than any automated method. Robert Coombs sent thousands of AI-generated applications through a bot. He got zero job offers. The one offer he accepted came from a relationship.

What should I look for when evaluating an AI career coach?

Check their own LinkedIn profile. Do they have the positioning, authority signals, and follower count that would get them recruited in their claimed domain? Misspellings, missing positioning, an outdated cover photo from their last job, and two different names on the profile and email signature are red flags that the advice does not match the results.

Why do relationships outperform applications in today's job market?

Because 70 to 80 percent of roles fill before they ever post publicly. Hiring managers hire people they already trust or that someone they trust vouches for. An algorithm cannot replicate the credibility that comes from a genuine human relationship built before the role opens.

What is wrong with AI tools that apply to thousands of jobs automatically?

Mass application bots signal desperate, low-value job seeking. Recruiters can identify bot-generated applications. More importantly, the real roles - the six-figure remote offers - are not on job boards. They fill through relationships and inbound interest. No volume of automated applications reaches them.
