Don't Set New Year's Resolutions. Do This Instead.
90% of resolutions fail because they focus on outcomes instead of identity. Here's the mindset shift that actually works — and how I used it to transform my own life.
Don't Set New Year's Resolutions. Do This Instead.
Don't set New Year's resolutions.
Here's the hard truth: 90% of the time they don't work.
Why? Because resolutions focus on outcomes instead of identity.
The Resolution Trap
Instead of promising yourself a list of goals like:
- I'm going to lose 20 lbs
- I'm going to crush 75 HARD
- I'm going to save $5,000
Shift your mindset and focus on who you are instead of what you want to achieve:
- I am a healthy person, so I make intentional food choices that fuel and strengthen my body
- I am an active person, so I move my body daily as an act of care and respect
- I am a person who values financial security, so I automate my savings every month
This mindset shift allowed me to make some of the biggest changes in my life — when I realized my current identity was the top roadblock to becoming who I wanted to be.
What This Looks Like in Real Life
I switched to being vegetarian in a single day in 2021 by deciding to follow a compassionate diet. When I embraced my identity as a compassionate animal lover, choosing compassionate foods became automatic. Anything outside that identity simply didn't align anymore.
I've flossed 731 days in a row — every day since January 1, 2023 — because I want to live a long, healthy life for my children. Studies show that people who floss live longer, which means that small habit protects not only my dental health but my heart health and overall well-being. I am someone who invests in my future by caring for myself today.
I've lost 50 pounds in the last five months by choosing the identity of a person who is healthy and strong. By default, that means I nourish my body with food choices that make me stronger, healthier, and better every day.
Finite Goals vs. Infinite Goals
Finite goals focus on the finish line. Once you reach it, what's next?
Infinite goals are about who you are becoming. They are enduring and self-sustaining because they focus on identity and the habits that naturally flow from it.
When you embrace infinite goals, you're no longer chasing an endpoint. You're building a better version of yourself, step by step, day by day.
What This Means for Your Career
The same principle applies to your professional life. The professionals who transform their careers don't just set goals to "get a better job" or "make six figures." They decide to become someone who naturally attracts those opportunities — by building the skills, visibility, and relationships that make them the obvious choice.
This year, don't ask yourself, "What are my resolutions?"
Ask instead: "What cycles am I breaking?"
Choose one cycle to end. Choose the identity that's capable of breaking it. Then practice daily habits that embody that identity.
The secret: breaking cycles is how you change your entire life.
What cycle will you break this year? And who will you become because of it?
It's not about the goal — it's about the transformation. You are the cycle breaker.
