Job Boards Are Keeping You Stuck

    Lindsay Mustain · Talent Paradigm

Job boards are keeping you stuck.

Not because they are evil. Not because you should never use them. But because most job seekers treat them like the whole game -- and they are only about 20% of it.

70-80% of jobs are never posted.

Let me say that again. The majority of roles are filled through referrals, internal moves, back-channel conversations, and relationships before they ever see a job board.

When you spend hours applying through LinkedIn Easy Apply or scrolling Indeed, you are fighting for the leftovers. You are one of a thousand faces in a pile of resumes that mostly look the same.

The best jobs do not go to the person who clicked first. They go to the person who was already known.

That is the Three Doors principle.

Door One is the posted market -- job boards, company sites, public listings. It is where everyone goes.

Door Two is the hidden market -- roles filled through referrals and relationships before they are ever posted.

Door Three is inbound -- opportunities that come to you because you are visible, positioned, and known as the person who solves a specific problem.

If you are only playing in Door One, you are invisible to the best opportunities.

The real moves happen inside networks. When you are positioned as the go-to expert, people refer you before jobs are posted. When you are visible to decision-makers, they reach out to you. When you build relationships before you need them, doors open that were never publicly advertised.

Stop treating job boards like a strategy. They are a supplement at best.

The real strategy is becoming someone the right people already know, trust, and want to recommend.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Why do job boards keep professionals stuck?

Job boards keep professionals stuck because they are crowded, reactive, and focused on the small percentage of roles that are already posted and already overrun with applicants.

What percentage of jobs are never posted publicly?

Research consistently shows that 70-80% of jobs are never posted publicly. They are filled through referrals, internal moves, and relationships before they ever reach a job board.

What should job seekers do instead of applying to job boards?

Job seekers should build visibility, relationships, and positioning so they are referred into roles before those roles are publicly posted.
