Roast My Resume: Why Recruiters Pass on You in 6 Seconds

    Lindsay Mustain · Talent Paradigm

You could be the most qualified person in the room.

    And still get passed over.

Not because you lack the skills. Not because the hiring manager made the wrong call.

Because in the first six seconds, your profile or resume did not answer the question every recruiter is unconsciously asking: Is this worth my time?

What the Roast My Resume Series Reveals

After reviewing more than 1,000,000 resumes across 16 years of recruiting for Fortune 100 companies, I started a video series doing something most recruiters never do: showing candidates exactly what we see, in real time.

Here is a summary of what keeps showing up:

Headlines that say absolutely nothing. "Experienced professional seeking new opportunities." That tells a recruiter your name, that you have a pulse, and nothing else.

About sections written in third person. Nobody writes their own biography in third person in real life. It creates distance and reads like a press release about a person who does not quite exist.

Photos that look like a cropped wedding picture. Your LinkedIn photo is part of your personal brand. If it is blurry, off-center, or clearly clipped from a group shot, it signals that your personal brand does not matter to you.

No quantifiable metrics anywhere. Senior professionals who write "managed teams" or "improved processes" without a single number are invisible. Recruiters are scanning for proof, not adjectives.

Boring, generic bullet points that blend into every other resume. If I removed your name and replaced it with any of the 1,000 other applicants in the pile, would anyone notice? If the answer is no, your positioning needs to change.

    The Six-Second Audit

Before your next application, run this audit on your own profile:

    1. Read only your headline. Does it tell a recruiter your function, your scope, and why you are different?
    2. Read only the first three lines of your About section. Is there a specific result in those lines?
    3. Look at your most recent role's bullet points. Are more than half of them results with numbers?
    4. Open your profile on your phone. Is your headshot professional enough for a $150K job?

If you answered no to any of these, you have found your Hireability Gap - the distance between how qualified you are and how qualified you appear.

The Theory of Hireability™ is the framework for closing that gap. Start there.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Why do qualified candidates get passed over in six seconds?

Because recruiters and hiring managers are not reading - they are scanning for reasons to say no. When a profile or resume is generic, vague, or visually cluttered, it takes too long to extract value. The recruiter moves on without ever seeing your most impressive credentials.

What does a recruiter look for in the first six seconds?

Clarity of purpose (what role are you targeting), evidence of relevant results (do your bullet points show impact or just tasks), and visual professionalism (does the layout make it easy to extract information quickly). A recruiter needs to be able to answer 'is this person worth a second look' in the time it takes to blink twice.

What are the most common resume and LinkedIn mistakes that get people passed over?

Generic headlines that could apply to anyone. About sections written in third person or with mission-statement language. Experience sections that list job duties instead of results. No quantifiable metrics. Photos that look unprofessional or are clearly cropped from personal events.

How can a senior professional fix this before their next application?

Start with your LinkedIn headline and the first three lines of your About section - those are what appear in recruiter search results. Replace vague language with specific scope and results. Then audit your experience section: every bullet point should answer the question 'so what?' with a number.
