    The Positioning Gap

You've Been Told to 'Sell Yourself.' No One Ever Told You How.

Every career coach tells you to sell yourself. Nobody gives you the actual framework. Here's what top candidates do instead of keyword-stuffing their resume for the 73rd time.

    The Positioning Gap

You've Been Told to 'Sell Yourself.' No One Ever Told You How.

    Lindsay Mustain · Talent Paradigm

You've been told you've got to "sell yourself."

What the #$%! does that even mean.

    No one told you how.

    So you list your tasks.

You rewrite your resume for the 73rd time.

You stuff keywords and hope someone will see your value.

But hiring managers don't connect with bullet points.

    They connect with stories.

The Real Problem With "Sell Yourself" Advice

The phrase "sell yourself" is not advice. It's noise.

It tells you the destination but gives you zero map. So most people default to what feels safe: more keywords, more bullet points, more tailoring for the algorithm. And then they wonder why they're invisible.

Here's what nobody says out loud: hiring managers aren't evaluating your task list. They're evaluating whether they trust you to walk in the door and make their problem smaller.

Trust doesn't come from a keyword. It comes from a story.

The Framework for Career Stories That Actually Work

Know your audience. Who is reading this? What keeps them up at night? What problem are they trying to solve? Speak their language before you talk about yourself.

Highlight a challenge you've faced. Not your job description. A real moment. What was the actual problem - the one that had to be solved or something broke?

Describe the action you took. Not "collaborated" or "supported." What did you specifically do? What decision did you make that nobody else made?

Back it with real numbers. "Proven results" is a phrase that proves nothing. Show the dollar amount. The percentage. The hours saved. The headcount impact. Numbers don't brag. They witness.

Cut the buzzwords. Use your voice. "Results-oriented team player with a passion for excellence" is what every candidate sounds like. You don't sound like that. Stop writing like you do.

What About Gaps and Career Pivots?

Here's the thing: if your career didn't go in a straight line, that's not a liability. It's evidence of adaptability.

The leaders people most want to hire have done more than one thing, been more than one version of themselves, and come out the other side knowing things a straight-line career can't teach.

Your non-linear path is your advantage. The story you tell about it determines whether a hiring manager sees that or not.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What does the Hireability Gap mean and why does it matter for my job search?

The Hireability Gap is the distance between what candidates believe gets them hired (applying, tailoring resumes, using keywords) and what actually works (relationships, visibility, clear career storytelling). Most people spend months inside the gap before realizing the strategy itself was wrong. Closing it starts with telling the right story, to the right person, in the right way.

How do I tell my career story if I'm not a natural writer?

Start by thinking in terms of problems and outcomes, not responsibilities and tasks. Every strong career moment has a structure: here's what was broken, here's what I did about it, here's what changed. You don't need to write beautifully. You need to write specifically. Specificity does the work that eloquence can't.

Why do hiring managers connect with stories but not bullet points?

Bullet points list what you did. Stories show what you're capable of. Hiring managers are making a bet on the future when they hire - they need to picture you inside their company, solving their problems. A story gives them that picture. A list of duties gives them nothing to imagine with.

What is the Theory of Hireability™ and how does storytelling fit into it?

The Theory of Hireability™ is the framework Lindsay Mustain built after 16 years as a Fortune 100 recruiter and 10,000+ hires. It reframes job searching around becoming the obvious choice before the role even posts. Career storytelling is foundational to that - you can't be visible, credible, or the Candidate of Choice if the story you're telling doesn't connect your value to the company's need. The full framework lives at TheoryOfHireability.com.

What should I do if I have multiple career pivots or an unconventional path?

Own it. A non-linear career is evidence of adaptability - one of the most valuable things a senior professional can demonstrate in a volatile market. The key is to connect the through-line across your pivots: what core skill or judgment showed up in every role? That through-line is your story. It's not in spite of your pivots. It's because of them.
