The Toxic HR Director Who Taught Me That Reputation Is Everything

Years ago, I worked under a Human Resources Director who was my worst nightmare.

Not just to me - to EVERYONE.

He was belittling, condescending, and emotionally abusive.

The kind of guy who prided himself on making people cry at the office.

He referred to our employees as "belly buttons." They weren't real people, they were just numbers on a spreadsheet to him.

He was a truly horrible human who made the workplace toxic for everyone around him.

    Eventually, I left.

Fast-forward a little while. I'm now a recruiter at Amazon, running a high-level HR leadership search.

And there he was. His name popped up in my applicant pool.

    I had a visceral reaction.

I remembered everything he put me, my team, my peers, and client groups through.

I didn't do it because I was holding a grudge - but because it wasn't a one-off thing. It was a pattern, what he was known for. His signature move that impacted his reputation and was so toxic that it stuck. His brand poisoned his well.

I left a professional note: "I've worked directly with this candidate. Happy to provide context if you're considering next steps."

Not petty. Not personal. Just protective.

He was not selected to move forward.

Because here's what most job seekers forget:

This world is small. Recruiters do talk - and remember. Your reputation walks into the room before you do - especially how you treat people.

The best candidates aren't just qualified. They're trusted.

Their reputation walks in the room before they do. Their reputation can even open doors they didn't knock at.

And the truth? Top candidates aren't applying. They're branded. Respected. And they're recruited.
