Use It or Lose It: Why Your Job Search Muscle Needs Constant Training
We only practice job search skills when it's urgent. But the professionals who ascend in salary and scope repeatedly are the ones who kept those muscles active.
Use It or Lose It: Why Your Job Search Muscle Needs Constant Training
August was rough, y'all.
Unexpectedly, my daughter needed to have surgery.
We had about 40 hours of notice between finding out it needed to happen and this picture below just before surgery.
It's a complete 180-degree turn to go from trying to make summer memories with your kids to just trying to help my daughter learn to walk again.
During her recovery, there was a LOT of pain.
We adopted the mantra of "use it or lose it."
Despite the pain, she had to learn to use it or risk losing her mobility (and independence).
She's been a trooper, and despite the agony, she has done great and is about 75% back to her normal self less than a month later.
So why am I sharing this with my community?
As I sat and contemplated the "use it or lose it" ideology, I realized that's the same thing that goes wrong in job searches.
We often only practice our job search skills when it's urgent - when we need to make a change fast. And because we haven't built these muscles before that moment, it's no wonder we falter.
My best client success stories aren't just the ones who land six-figure remote roles in under 9 weeks. It's those who do it over and over again.
They continue to ascend in salary, expand their scope, and find better career alignment each time.
They're the ones who practiced "use it or lose it."
